Structures and Materials

Module Title Structures and Materials
Module Level Level 1
Module Credits 5.00

Aims and Fit of Module

This module introduces students to the basic principles of structural design and construction materials and methodologies. It aims to provide core knowledge, critical understanding and applied experience by focusing on the integration of the technical requirements with the architectural form and the relevant sustainability criteria.

Learning outcomes

A.	Explain the fundamental principles of structural behaviour and construction techniques, including how forces, loads, and assembly methods influence architectural design.
B.	Recognise the main structural systems and construction materials, their applications, key properties and performance indicators
C.	Evaluate and select materials and structural systems in relation to questions of construction and sustainability.
D.	Formulate simple design schemes that reconcile expressive intentions and technical constraints.
E.	Communicate structural and material concepts effectively through technical drawings, diagrams, and verbal explanations in a design context.

Method of teaching and learning

Subject material will be delivered by formal lectures supported by speculative structural experiments and small exercises. Students are encouraged to learn through the use of models, drawings and materials research.
