Aims and Fit of Module
This module introduces students to the basic principles of structural design. It focuses on the relationship and integration of materials, structural systems and designed form. Students are encouraged to learn through designing and building of experimental models. Structural and material appropriateness are discussed with a focus on architectural design concerns.
Learning outcomes
A Identify and explain principles of structural design.
B Discuss simple structures.
C Explain and choose suitable materials and structural systems for given architectural forms.
D Perform simple numerical and experimental structural design techniques.
E Formulate simple design schemes that reconcile expressive intentions and technical constraints.
Method of teaching and learning
Subject material will be delivered by formal lectures supported by speculative structural experiments and small exercises. Students are assessed through a final examination and a study report.
