Aims and Fit of Module
In this studio module, students generate a small-scale design proposal based on an initial brief. Students’ proposals should show a process of design development from an initial concept to a final architectural design proposal. The final proposal should demonstrate students’ ability to design a series of spaces, with appropriate use of architectural means to produce a range of architectural qualities. Design proposals should respond creatively to the site context as well as to spatial, structural and technical requirements set out in the brief.
Learning outcomes
A interpret a design brief and produce a basic design proposal in response
B conduct, analyse and present research to support design proposals
C identify, select and apply appropriate materials and structural systems in relation to architectural design proposals
D make use of various drawing and model formats to develop and present design proposals
.
Method of teaching and learning
Project work developed through group and individual tutorials and presented for public discussion. Additional tutorials by structure, building fabric environmental and acoustic experts. Architects in practice are invited to participate in the final critique of the project.
