Aims and Fit of Module
In this final studio module students should demonstrate that they have acquired all the necessary knowledge and skills to respond sensibly and creatively to a complex architectural design task exploring the detailed resolution of human needs, while also taking into account the cultural, historical, technological and contextual issues that inform architecture.
Learning outcomes
A Demonstrate a conceptual and critical approach to architectural design, presenting evidence of an evaluation of appropriate research resources, arguments as well as assumptions, on the basis of a coherent design process.
B Demonstrate an understanding of the values of a culture of risk and experimentation for design innovation.
C Demonstrate an ability to generate sensible and creative architectural responses, presenting an understanding of the centricity of human needs to architectural design, of social and cultural context, regulatory frameworks, professional values, health and safety concerns, universal design principles, as well as of construction, structural, material, environmental, economic and functional aspects.
D Demonstrate advanced knowledge in representing architecture according to conventions.
E Present and argue design proposals clearly and effectively by applying a range of communication methods and media, including digital tools.
Method of teaching and learning
The framework of the final studio ensures a diversity of approaches allowing students greater freedom in defining their method of learning and their approach to architectural design. The project work is developed in a studio setting supported by seminars, lectures, group and individual tutorials. Students regularly present their work for public discussion. Critics include all the staff of the department and those involved in delivering the module, visiting lecturers from other schools and practicing architects. Tutorials and critiques with specialist consultants (both in-house and external) are also held specifically in order to reinforce the technical and structural parts of the provision.
