Aims and Fit of Module
This module is composed of practicals (weeks 1-7) and lectures (weeks 8-14). The lecture series aims to give students with an interest in genetics and molecular biology a more advanced introduction to topics in modern genetics. It will integrate classical concepts with modern genome-wide approaches to study the genetics of disease and disease susceptibility. It is also intended to provide the foundation for the genetic analysis of disease and the bioinformatics of genomics. The practical sessions will provide experience in a range of genetic techniques including the selection and genetic characterization of mutations, cytogenetics and karyotype analysis, population studies, the molecular analysis of genomes through reverse genetics.

H. Plan and execute a series of experiments and use laboratory equipment correctly and safely to generate data.

Method of teaching and learning
The contents of the Lecture part of the module will be delivered primarily via standard lectures, that will be accompanied by suitable lecture hand-outs (also available online). Students will also be guided to sections of specific textbooks, reviews or source literature. Intervals during the module revision (up to 3), lectures or exercises will allow students to self-assess their understanding of the course.
