Aims and Fit of Module
To provide students with lab-based training in DNA manipulation, protein biochemistry, and large-scale screening for bioactive compounds
Learning outcomes
CODE OUTCOME
A demonstrate a critical awareness and understanding of the latest advances in biotechnological methods and how to apply these methods to a research project
B Critically discuss the principles of the latest methodologies for the generation of protein expression vectors
C Evaluate the principles of the latest methodologies for the expression and biochemical characterization of recombinant proteins, and the application of these molecules in drug discovery programmes
D Appraise the processes required for high throughput screening technologies to identify small molecules with potential for development of new pharmaceuticals
E apply, critically evaluate and interpret the knowledge and understanding gained to solve complex problems in biology
Method of teaching and learning
Lectures and tutorials will be offered in the first two weeks and a core practical will follow in weeks 3 and 4. The last week will be used for wrap up and discussion of report writing or assignments.
