Module Title Advanced Electrical Circuits and Electromagnetics
Module Level Level 2
Module Credits 5.00

Aims and Fit of Module

To equip students with tools to analyse electrical circuits with an understanding of the nature of electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields, which are important to engineering and applications

Learning outcomes

A. Understand the transient and frequency responses of first order and second order networks;
B. Understand magnetically coupled circuits and the concept of mutual inductance; three phase networks and the concept of a balanced and unbalanced network, and the interconnection of two port networks;
C. Understand basic principles related to Electrostatics and Magnetostatics;
D. Understand the use of Maxwell's equations in differential and integral form for engineering applications, and the energy aspects of electromagnetic fields and understand the principle and properties of plane waves in free space;
E. Understand measurements on the circuits introduced and analyse the results;

Method of teaching and learning

This module will be delivered by a combination of formal lectures, problem classes, and laboratory work.
