Aims and Fit of Module
This module may only be taken as a substitute for Classical Chinese 1 by students who do not meet the language entry requirement for that module.
The aim of the module is to introduce students to the literary language of classical Chinese texts from ancient and medieval times, as well as to the essentials of vocabulary, grammar and phonology. At the end of the module students will be familiar with a range of classical Chinese works, and will be able to read and translate simple texts from classical Chinese into English.
Learning outcomes
A. Show familiarity with the range and scope of classical Chinese texts.
B. Demonstrate understanding of the essentials of classical Chinese grammar.
C. Demonstrate understanding of the basics of classical Chinese phonology.
D. Show familiarity with a range of classical Chinese idioms and proverbs and their metaphorical meaning.
E. Read Classical Chinese texts in the original and translate them into English.
F. Demonstrate a capacity for independent research.
