Aims and Fit of Module
This module aims to provide students with an understanding of the nature of social stratification in China and the ways in which it has changed over time. It will introduce students to the predominant social classes in China by focusing on the transformation of these classes and their social position in recent history. Students will study the patterns, processes and consequences of inequality and class difference in China. The module will consider emergent class identities and the ways in which they are socially constructed and communicated in contemporary China.

A. Demonstrate a clear understanding of the main determinants of social stratification in China
B. Demonstrate understanding of the relationship between social stratification and social change in China
C. Analyse historical patterns of social stratification and the ways in which they have changed over time
D. Demonstrate understanding of the regional variations in patterns of social stratification and social change
E. Critically engage with the principle debates in the academic literature about inequality, class and social stratification
F. Use analytical skills to present arguments.
Method of teaching and learning
The module will be taught by lectures, which will introduce content, and seminars, which are for discussion, debate and clarification of ideas.
