To understand the interaction between Chinese society and its system of governance at sub-national levels.

Learning outcomes

A	Have a clear understanding of the function and operation of the different parts of the PRC’s system of government at sub-national levels.

B	Understand the determinants of state-market and state-society relations in China

C	Develop awareness of debates in the academic literature about the purpose, processes, and consequences for the division of political space.

D	Appreciate the practical and public concerns surrounding the sub-national division of political space in China  

E	Understand the interaction between administration and politics in the operation of the PRC’s system of sub-national governance.

F	Develop an understanding of China’s spatial variety

G	Understand the role of different forms of local government in local developmental experiences

H	Have an understanding of the scope of the international literature on China’s local government and local experience of development
