To understand the roles of gender in the contemporary Chinese society and the sociology of China
Learning outcomes
A. Demonstrate critical understanding of changing gender norms and complex roles gendered subjects play in Chinese society
B. Compare transformations in marriage and reproduction between the founding of the PRC and the late reform period
C. Critically analyze how gender affects social mobility in educational institutions and the workplace
D. Critically analyze the production of gendered subjectivities in rural and urban China
E. Analyze the impacts of China’s population policy on women
F. Debate changing sexuality and gender roles in contemporary China
Method of teaching and learning
This module is taught across the semester through lectures for rehearsals of weekly topics and seminars for presentation and group discussions. The project is now a more focused series of tasks including class participation, essay preparation, seminar presentation and research essay.
