Aims and Fit of Module
The aim of this module is to provide students with an assessment of the economic development of reform era China, with a particular focus on urban issues. The module considers the regulatory role of the state as the main variable from where to understand the interrelated and changing dynamics of land use and investments as key driving forces of economic change in Chinese cities. The module content discusses different developmental trajectories of particular regions and cities in relation to national policies and reforms.

A Assess economic development of reform era China as an uneven and institutionally-shaped process.
B Explain the relation between changes in land value and capital investments in the context of urban China.
C Explain the role of the Chinese state in regulating the urban economy.
D Identify the main city-regions of China and synthetize the connections they establish to shape the national economy.
E Apply a multidisciplinary approach to evaluate China’s economic development.
F Work collaboratively and/or demonstrate a capacity for independent research.
Method of teaching and learning
In the seminars students will able to have an in-depth discussion of weekly topics, and also to present their analysis of a specific topic from the syllabus. The essay plan and the essay will hone students’ analytical and writing abilities.
