Solids and Structures

Module Title Solids and Structures
Module Level Level 1
Module Credits 5.00

Aims and Fit of Module

To introduce basic principles of statics and to illustrate the application of these principles to the formulation and solution of a range of representative engineering mechanics problems.

Learning outcomes

A. Understand and apply the derivation of mathematical models for static analysis of mechanical systems.

B. Analyse beam cross sections to determine the centroid, moments of inertia, section modulus, and principal moments of inertia.

C. Analyse statically determinate trusses, beams, and torsional structures.

D. Determine stresses corresponding to normal force and bending moments.

E. Perform stress transformations using the equation method and Mohr’s circle.

Method of teaching and learning

Lectures and tutorials are integrated, i.e. each lecture contains new theoretical topics, worked examples and opportunities for students to solve problems. Some lectures are used as pure tutorials. Coursework, which enable students to use the acquired knowledge in an integrated manner, are given in essential parts of the syllabus. Simple computer software for analysis of trusses and beams is an integrated part of the coursework. Simple practical laboratory experiments are carried out by the students.
