Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to introduce the general concepts and procedures in construction methods associated with civil engineering projects including foundation, concrete, steel, timber and masonry structures, and incorporation of sustainability and H&S into construction.

Learning outcomes

A. Understand the construction methods associated with foundation structures, concrete structures, steel structures, timer and masonry structures as well as temporary works
B. Plan construction projects using Gantt chart and PERT network, and identify critical path
C. Evaluate H&S in construction, prepare risk assessments & method statements and take account of sustainability in construction.
D. Assess visited construction sites
E. Apply setting out skills
F. Develop skills in report writing

Method of teaching and learning

The module is taught through formal lectures, class tutorials and site visits.
