Aims and Fit of Module
The aim of this module is to introduce the analysis and design of reinforced concrete and steel structures, with a focus on applying relevant codes of practice and standards, developing professional judgement, and fostering awareness of current industry practices and engineering requirements.
Learning outcomes
A. Recognise the principles of limit state, importance of materials behaviour and contribution, performance of various forms of structural members, combination of actions, path and forms of the structural loading as well as health and safety issues related to the design.
B. Interpret rules from Eurocodes into reinforced concrete and steelwork design and evaluate the limiting values for any section chosen.
C. Produce initial design decisions, sizing and selection of elemental structural members.
D. Perform structural design and analysis within an integrated context involving considerations of sustainable development, diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI), design risks and uncertainties.
E. Analyse experimental results and determine their validity and accuracy.
F. Develop experience and key skills in data manipulation, presentation of analysis and design methodologies, report writing and self-learning.
Method of teaching and learning
The module is delivered through formal lectures, tutorials and practical sessions.
