Aims and Fit of Module
The module aims to introduce students to advanced material characterisation techniques and experimental methods used to screen their electronic, mechanical, optical, and thermal properties. Students will learn how theoretical principles are translated into experimental methods for material characterisation and apply various methodologies and approaches for data analysis and interpretation.
Learning outcomes
A Select and apply microscopic techniques for the characterisation of materials and analysis of their properties.
B Apply elemental and surface analysis techniques for the identification of chemical elements, chemical states, and properties of materials.
C Apply thermal analysis techniques to measure properties or property changes of materials as a function of temperature.
Method of teaching and learning
The module is delivered through formal lectures, tutorial exercises, online review material and experimental laboratory classes. Students will learn through a combination of theory and practical experimentation and develop data analysis, writing and oral presentation skills through laboratory and project work.
