Module Title Introductory Inorganic Chemistry
Module Level Level 1
Module Credits 5.00

Aims and Fit of Module

The aim of this module is to give students an understanding of the underlying principles of the chemistry of the main-group elements and to give them an appreciation of the importance of inorganic chemistry in everyday life.

Learning outcomes

A	discuss the principle of atomic and molecular electronic structure, and the three-dimensional shape of molecules

B	show understanding of acid-base theories and redox equilibria

C	discuss the chemistry of main group elements and compounds, including oxides, hydroxides, halides, and hydrides

D	describe the structures of simple solids

E	demonstrate basic knowledge of the structure and reactivity of organometallic compounds of the main group elements

F	appreciate the fundamental techniques used in the preparation and analysis of simple inorganic compounds

G	develop planning and time-management skills associated with practical work, and report writing

Method of teaching and learning

Lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions
