Aims and Fit of Module
The aim of this module is to give students a broad, interdisciplinary background in catalysis across the traditional divides within chemistry.
Learning outcomes
A: Recognize mechanistic parallels between chemical and biocatalytic processes.
B: Be aware of the most significant applications of organometallic catalysis.
C: Propose a likely mechanism for a new catalytic reaction and to propose experiments designed to confirm or refute their proposal.
D: Possess a realistic integrated understanding and knowledge of the basic principles of heterogeneous catalysis.
E: Derive appropriate kinetic equations and models for catalytic reactions that may involve complicated reaction sequences.
Method of teaching and learning
This module will be delivered by a combination of lectures and tutorials. Lectures will be designed to provide essential information and introduce students to the basic tools of analysis, including some basic practice in applying the techniques. Tutorials will be based around exercise sheets, the completion of which and their discussion in workshops will provide students with a learning opportunity designed to extend the material introduced in the lectures.
The assessment consists of 2 coursework and final exam that assess different learning outcomes.
