Aims and Fit of Module
The module introduces students to the art and craft of creative nonfiction. Drawing on a range of narrative theories, students will be taught how to choose and research a topic, collect information, structure stories, write engagingly about the self and the other, convey a sense of authority in their work, and publish. First, students will apply their close reading and critical-analytical skills to a range of original true stories published in newspapers, magazines, blogs, social media and other digital platforms. Second, they will sharpen their writing skills by learning how to be narratively plausible and describe in a vivid manner people, scenes, objects, feelings and ideas. Ultimately, students will have to produce an original, authentic and untold human-interest story. The module builds upon and develops methods, theories and techniques taught within production modules. It also complements theoretical modules such as Representation, Diversity and Identity.
A Demonstrate an understanding of the key principles of storytelling and their application to contemporary media
B Critically analyse and reflect on practical aspects and theoretical principles involved in nonfiction writing
C Conduct in-depth interviews and use first-hand documentary sources to gather information
D Write and present in an engaging way a memorable and original story based on facts
