Aims and Fit of Module

This module is designed to discuss the relationship between journalism and the society within a global perspective and provide students with advanced reporting techniques. It introduces them to key historical developments, current social, economic and technological challenges and major themes and figures of in-depth reporting in journalism worldwide. Case studies typically include reporting in China, political scandals in the US, undercover reporting in the UK, celebrity stories and European cross-border investigations. Students will develop the research methods and newsgathering techniques needed to produce a piece of in-depth report, building on basic skills developed in News Reporting. This module is part of the Journalism/PR pathway.

A. Demonstrate a historical appreciation of defining moments and figures in the evolution of investigative journalism
B. Evaluate the impact of challenges, changes and influences on in-depth reporting
C. Assess the journalistic quality and social effects of analytical reporting
D. Apply advanced journalistic techniques to research and produce an in-depth report
