Research Methods in Communication

Module Title Research Methods in Communication
Module Level Level 4
Module Credits 5.00

Aims and Fit of Module

The module aims to examine a range of quantitative and qualitative research strategies, designs and methods, and to help students assess the strengths and weaknesses of methods and methodologies. It will also provide students the opportunity to evaluate research questions and develop their own. In addition, the module discusses sampling, data analysis and research ethics. Given the wide variety of research methods, and especially the fundamental differences between quantitative and qualitative methods students will have the option to focus on either, depending on their expertise, interests, and future plans, especially as to their Individual Final Project. For the second assessment, students can choose to design a survey (quantitative) or a focus group or qualitative interview (qualitative). For the third assignment, students can design and conduct either a quantitative or qualitative content and data analysis. The module fits the programme in that it provides students the opportunity to practice their research skills relevant to media and communication topics. It prepares students for the Individual Final Project.
