Module Title The Student Experience In Global Education
Module Level Level 4
Module Credits 5

Aims and Fit of Module

The aims of this module are to:

1. Develop students’ critical understanding of major theories, concepts, and debates related to the student experience, student journey, belonging, engagement, well-being, and success in global higher education.
2. Examine how globalization, internationalization, curriculum, language, policy, institutional culture, technology and AI, support systems, and stakeholder expectations shape the student experience in diverse international, transnational, and Sino-foreign university settings.
3. Engage students in research-led and project-based learning through the analysis of student experience issues and the development of the student experience diagnosis component of an integrated pathway project.
4. Cultivate students’ ability to use digital and AI-enabled tools critically, ethically, and strategically for student journey mapping, feedback analysis, evidence synthesis, communication, and service planning.

Learning outcomes

A. Critically analyse major theories, concepts, and contemporary debates related to the student experience in global education, and evaluate their implications for diverse student populations in higher education.
B. Evaluate how curriculum, language, policy, institutional culture, technology and AI, student support, and stakeholder expectations shape the student experience across the student journey in international and intercultural higher education contexts.
C. Collaboratively conduct and communicate a research-informed analysis of the student experience in a real or realistic higher education institution as the student experience component of an integrated pathway project, using appropriate evidence to identify priority issues and areas for improvement.
D. Use digital and AI-enabled tools critically, ethically, and strategically to support student journey mapping, feedback analysis, service evaluation, collaboration, and professional communication, with attention to privacy, bias, and responsible data use.

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions consist of Seminars, Field experiences, and Self-Study.

In EDS410, we adopt “E-portfolio”, as the assessment for the module. This assessment offers a multitude of advantages that enhance both students’ learning experience and the demonstration of critical thinking, analysis, digital skills, and responsible and critical usage of AI. An E-portfolio allows for a dynamic presentation of the student learning journey, enabling them to incorporate various types of documents, which can richly showcase their understanding of, and reflections on, global education. This flexibility also supports diverse learning styles and creative expression, making their learning process more engaging and personalized. Additionally, an E-portfolio facilitates a reflective learning process, encouraging students to think critically about their experiences and learning outcomes, leading to deeper understanding and self-awareness. It also serves as a powerful tool for personal branding, allowing students to curate a professional analytical and digital presence that showcases their skills and achievements to potential employers or educational institutions. By engaging with this assessment form, students will not only demonstrate mastery of the module's content but also acquire valuable digital and AI literacy that are increasingly important in today’s global and digitalized world.
The three tasks within this E-portfolio assessment are intricately linked to providing a comprehensive evaluation of engagement with global education experiences. Task 1 asks students to prepare a proposal for a project-based case study of student experiences.
Task 2 expands on this by asking students to create a shared experience webpage that reflects on their academic achievements and experiences during their master's program, showcasing their ability to document and critically analyze their learning journey as well as activate their digital skills.
Finally, Task 3 involves writing a comprehensive project based case study based on real student experiences in global education, as well as disseminating the project’s results to a wider audience. This sequence encourages a deep engagement with the material, fostering a reflective and analytical approach to understanding the impact of global education experiences on student development as well as suggesting a stage-by-stage development of meaningful evidence-based projects supported by digital and AI technologies.
