Aims and Fit of Module
This module aims to equip students with key knowledge and understanding of semiconductor physics and fundamental principles of silicon microelectronics design. Students will also acquire the confidence and necessary practical skills to handle semiconductor components and materials and perform measurements in controlled laboratory settings. The knowledge and skills obtained through this module serve as a crucial foundation for students' further study within the broad field of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
Learning outcomes
A. Explain the physical laws of semiconductors and their mapping to diodes and transistors.
B. Describe the usage of certain semiconductor, insulator and conducting materials in microelectronic devices.
C. Design a simple MOS circuit including tolerance and feature sizes.
D. Demonstrate independent learning and design skills coupled with problem solving skills.
Method of teaching and learning
This module is delivered through a combination of formal lectures and tutorials. Lectures deliver the foundational/theoretical content for semiconductors and electronic circuits. Tutorials provide students with the opportunity to put into practice the theoretical content learned during the lectures through practical tasks such as designing a simple MOS circuit. There is a strong emphasis on developing design skills and practical problem solving.
