Aims and Fit of Module
To give a general introduction to the aerodynamics of modern wind turbines
To introduce the design of rotor blades of wind turbines, and the placement of wind turbines with respect to fatigue, annual power production, noise and the impact on environment.
To give an introduction to the generators, transformers and power converters relevant to wind turbines and water turbines.
To give a general introduction to the hydrodynamics and various categories of hydro power stations.
To give a general introduction to the hybrid power systems, including wind power, hydro power and energy storage, as well as the control strategies of such systems.
Learning outcomes
A. Acquire knowledge on aerodynamics and control strategies of wind turbine rotor blades.
B. Assess power generation and energy production from wind and hydro power generation.
C. Evaluate various technical aspects relevant to the development, implementation and grid connection of a given wind energy and hydro power project.
D. Carry out circuit analysis of wind power systems with various types of generators
E. Understand the design for specific power systems based on wind energy or small hydro power energy that meet specific energy demands and are economically feasible and have a minimal impact on the environment.
Method of teaching and learning
This module will be delivered through a combination of formal lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions and oral presentations.
