Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to give students an introduction to the theoretical literature on entrepreneurship. In doing so, the module will allow students to develop their critical skills and to analyse the internal and external factors that impact on entrepreneurship and how they intertwine to create success. Students will be able to develop understanding of how entrepreneurs use their social skills to acquire resources and the characteristics of ventures which are ethically and socially oriented. Through the assessments, they will be able to demonstrate how entrepreneurship connects to the development and performance of larger organisations.Through a series of examples of "real-life" entrepreneurs, they will apply how entrepreneurship theory relates to practice.

Learning outcomes

A. Describe and explain the concept of entrepreneurship and the types and characteristics of small businesses
B. Recognise and recall the psychological theories of entrepreneurship and analyse how entrepreneurs acquire resources and persuade others to invest in their novel venture.
C. Identify the various environmental factors, external to the individual, which can influence the extent of entrepreneurship in society
D. Describe and discuss the concept of social enterprise and corporate social responsibility
E. Outline how entrepreneurship connects to innovation in large businesses

Method of teaching and learning

The learning strategy that underpins the above learning outcomes is founded on a series of pedagogical principles that promote the integration of theory and practice, the importance of critical thinking, prudence and practical judgement and effective and efficient action. A variety of teaching and learning techniques that will be employed in the delivery of the course, including guest speakers, intensive tutorials and case analysis.
This module will be delivered by a combination of lectures and tutorial.
