Aims and Fit of Module
This module’s major aim is to provide students with information that allows them to make an informed choice between the two areas of emphasis: Ecology & Environmental Pollution. The module complements a similar ENV114 in the same semester of year 2. This module aims to provide students with an introduction to the basic concepts of the earth system, ecology, and evolution. In addition to placing ecology, within a geosystem and evolution context, it highlights both natural processes and human impacts on ecological systems, and uses case studies to discuss the challenges and possible solutions to environmental pollution.
Learning outcomes
A Demonstrate knowledge of the basic concepts of ecology.
B Classify basic concepts in biodiversity, species interactions and ecosystems in the context of evolution
C Classify the process of environmental changes over geological time scales and the significance of human-induced global change
D Develop basic research skills in scientific reading, group-collaboration and academic communications
E Apply the knowledge to real-world case studies in environmental issues
Method of teaching and learning
This module is delivered by weekly lecture sessions to cover various environmental topics and focus on different ecological system levels, which is supported by reading assignments, background introduction & class discussions. The module also includes seminars and case studies to develop basic research skills and apply the knowledge to real-world case studies in environmental issues.
