Aims and Fit of Module
This module intends to introduce the dissertation process,
including (1) identifying a dissertation topic related to
empirical corporate finance, financial accounting, financial
economics, or asset pricing; (2) how to conduct and write up a
literature review and find an interesting research question;
(3) how to conduct a research design, thereby forming a
research proposal; and (4) understanding of different types of
research methods and how to apply them appropriately.
Learning outcomes
In completing the module, students should be able to
demonstrate:
A. A systematic understanding of knowledge and skills of how to
do empirical research
B. Originality in the application of knowledge, together with a
practical understanding of established, applied techniques of
research and analysis as used to interpret knowledge and
practice in the area
C. Conceptual understanding that enables the student to
evaluate methodologies and develop critiques of them and, where
appropriate, propose new practices
Method of teaching and learning
The main delivery approach is a topic with different focuses in
each lecture. Each lecture topic will guide students to start
their dissertation preparation and implementation.
