Aims and Fit of Module
This module explores the long history of film development, focusing on both artistic and industrial aspects. Throughout this module, students will develop a historical appreciation of film, exploring narrative, documentary, and experimental forms and acquire the critical, technical, and aesthetic vocabulary related to cinematic practices and structures.
Learning outcomes
A. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of film history and a variety of cinematic styles.
B. Demonstrate knowledge of significant movements, innovations, and figures in film history.
C. Form and articulate a critical analysis and evaluation of a cinematic work.
Method of teaching and learning
The teaching sessions are divided into two components (lectures and seminars/screenings). While reading a large amount of film history materials, students will watch some films or their clips that represent milestones in film history, and further deepen their understanding of film history through discussions.
