Aims and Fit of Module

This module is aimed at developing sound practices in streaming media, TV production, and documentary style-based work. It builds on the work that students have done at Level 1 in their Introduction to Sound module. The module provides an opportunity to the aspiring sound recordist and sound producer who want explore their craft by understanding the demands made in on set location sound recording and creating a concise soundtrack in post-production.

Specifically, the module is designed to:

Give student sound recordists/sound engineers a greater understanding of the
theories and principles of sound both on location and in post-production
Enable student sound recordists/engineers to experience and use a range of
industry standard equipment

Engage student sound recordists/engineers in discovering the relationship
between storytelling and the creation of atmospheric soundscapes
Help student sound recordists/engineers prepare for shoots, conduct
themselves professionally on set and create soundscape in post-production in
order to achieve their creative vision

Enable student sound recordists/engineers to use sound to convey meaning
effectively

Further enable student sound recordists/engineers to demonstrate the ability
to critically reflect on their decision making and place it within a
historical context.

Gain an understanding of sound recordists and sound engineers
so that they can conduct themselves at a
professional level.

Learning outcomes

A Analyse and critique the construction of soundtracks for TV-production projects, understanding the practice of recording sound on location and working with sound in post-production.
B Successfully collaborate and communicate with directors, cinematographers and editors in developing a soundtrack for TV.
C Effectively translate a script into sound production intentions by using a number of location sound recording techniques and creating a soundtrack in post to enable the creation of meaning through sound.
D Effectively utilise a variety of post-production sound equipment and software in order to create meaning.
