Research Design and Planning

Module Title Research Design and Planning
Module Level Level 4
Module Credits 5.00

Aims and Fit of Module

Aims:
This module allows students to develop a research plan that leads to their final Master Dissertation. Four pathway teachers will support students from different disciplines with the framework and structure of their projects. The module will begin the process of assigning each student an individual supervisor/advisor to provide them with subject-specific guidance. Together with their pathway teachers and individual supervisors, students will explore and identify a research project topic, establish research questions and formulate a research proposal for implementation in the subsequent semester.

Objectives:
The module, therefore, runs at the practical level of developing a research idea. In addition to his/her own supervisee students, the pathway teachers serve as the coordinator to oversee, facilitate and support the collaborations between the supervisors and students.

Learning outcomes

A Critically employ advanced research methods to address agendas in cultural and creative industries, both theoretically and empirically
B Develop critically the research plan that formulates the methodological strategy based upon a well-established research initiative
C Present an original research proposal that cover the research rationale and design

Method of teaching and learning

A short series of lectures will be delivered to refresh the research knowledge that students acquired in prerequisite modules. These lectures help students contextualise further their research thinking skills. Weekly seminar and tutorial sessions will be held between the students and their module teachers to discuss and reflect on the research progress and the relevant agendas.

This module is assigned with four different module teachers to guide students from different pathways. There will be four sections on the module handbook of specific syllabus corresponding to different pathway's requirements. In addition, each student will work with another assigned dissertation supervisor, usually in the form of weekly meetings, to formulate the research questions, approaches and plans, which all together generate a research proposal. The proposal will then be taken forward into the final dissertation module for implementation.
