Aims and Fit of Module
The module aims to introduce students to fundamental concepts, techniques and approaches regarding the use of information technology.
Learning outcomes
A. Demonstrate a basic understanding of how computers and information systems are used in business for the input, storage, analysis, communication and presentation of information.
B. Show appreciation of the issues involved in developing and running business computer systems, from the view point of the organization, the information technology (IT) specialist and the end-user.
C. Show appreciation of the role of business information systems as a source of competitive advantage.
Method of teaching and learning
The teaching philosophy of the module follows very much the philosophy of Syntegrative Education. This has meant that the teaching delivery pattern, which follows more intensive block teaching, allows more meaningful contribution from industry partners. This philosophy is carried through also in terms of assessment, with reduction on the use of exams and increase in coursework, especially problem-based assessments that are project focused. The delivery pattern provides space in the semester for students to concentrate on completing the assessments.
International case studies will be used, drawn from the set text to put the use of IT systems in an international context.
• Additional material will be in the form of web-based reading and research, selected texts, journal articles and contemporary magazines and press articles.
• Independent research and study will be encouraged.
• Students will be exposed to case studies on a range of organisations.
