Aims and Fit of Module
Aims of this module are that the “Internet of Things” heralds the connections of a nearly countless number of devices to the internet thus promising accessibility, boundless scalability, amplified productivity and a surplus of additional paybacks. The hype surrounding the IoT and its applications is already forcing companies to quickly upgrade their current processes, tools, and technology to accommodate massive data volumes and take advantage of insights.
This module “Introduction to IoT” is designed for students who want to understand what the Internet of Things is, how it evolved, what the core technologies and systems are and how it is implemented. The students will be able to understand the potential of the Internet of Things for our society, in terms of impact on the lives of billions of people and on the world economy.

Method of teaching and learning
The teaching philosophy of the module follows very much the philosophy of Syntegrative Education. This has meant that the teaching delivery pattern, which follows more intensive block teaching, allows more meaningful contribution from industry partners. This philosophy is carried through also in terms of assessment, with reduction on the use of exams and increase in coursework, especially problem-based assessments that are project focused. The delivery pattern provides space in the semester for students to concentrate on completing the assessments.
A combination of lectures, seminars as well as labs will be leveraged to enable the learning of academic contents. The assessment is made up of three courseworks. The coursework contains a group project to develop a small Internet of things based system and evaluate the students’ critical understanding of the theory components of the module.
