Aims and Fit of Module

The primary aim of the module is to provide an enlightening introduction to the multitude of technologies and significant applications dedicated to IoT for smart living. The focus of this module is not just on delivering a general overview of the structure and diverse use cases of IoT in smart living applications, but also on exploring deeper aspects such as understanding the technology platforms, tools, and user requirements for smart living services. Especially the module aims to equip students with a solid knowledge foundation of some core theoretical concepts and pertinent technologies, such as Human-Computer Interactions (HCI), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Security and Privacy Protection, each of which significantly underpin IoT for smart living. The module is also designed to enhance students' abilities to research and make informed comparisons of various smart living technologies for specific academic or industrial applications.

Keeping pace with rapid technological advancements, the module aims to foster a keen understanding of the development trends in smart living technologies, their potential in different domains, and their future trajectory. To ensure a well-rounded set of competencies, students will also gain insights into the processes involved in designing, developing, and maintaining a smart living system.

Learning outcomes

A. Demonstrate knowledge of the fundamental theoretical concepts and relevant technologies such as HCI (Human-Computer Interactions), AI (Artificial Intelligence), Security and Privacy Protection underpins IoT for smart living.
B. Research and compare various smart living technologies for a given academic/industrial application.
C. Describe the development trends in technologies for smart living products/systems and their future potential in different domains. 
D. Demonstrate an understanding of the processes to design, development and maintain a smart living system.

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching philosophy of the module follows very much the philosophy of Syntegrative Education. This has meant that the teaching delivery pattern, which follows more intensive block teaching, allows more meaningful contributions from a practical perspective. This philosophy is carried through also in terms of assessment, with a reduction in the use of exams and an increase in coursework, especially problem-based assessments that are project-focused. The delivery pattern provides space in the semester for students to concentrate on completing the assessments.

The module will be delivered via lectures and supervised laboratory sessions, as well as private studies.
