Aims and Fit of Module
This module is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the latest technologies and their applications related to the Internet of Things (IoT) in the context of smart manufacturing/industry hereafter referred to as smart manufacturing. You will gain a solid understanding of various IoT-enabled solutions that are currently being used in the smart manufacturing. You will be able to identify and critically evaluate issues and challenges associated with their implementation. Additionally, the module will cover various practices in smart manufacturing, giving you an in-depth understanding of the latest trends and practices in this field, which is essential for an IoT Engineer.
Learning outcomes
A. Understand and evaluate the concepts, processes, benefits and issues related to IoT for smart manufacturing.
B. Demonstrate an understanding of the process(es) of creating, implementing and maintaining IoT-based smart industrial systems and solutions.
C. Develop and demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of IoT technologies and their applications related to smart manufacturing.
Method of teaching and learning
The teaching philosophy of the module follows very much the philosophy of Syntegrative Education. This means that the delivery pattern follows intensive block teaching approach, which allows for meaningful contributions from a practical perspective. This philosophy is emphasised within the design of module assessments, with a reduction in the use of exams and an increase in coursework, with a particular emphasis on problem-based, task-based and/or project focused assessments . The delivery pattern provides space in the semester for students to concentrate on completing their assessments.
The module will be delivered via lectures, seminar and supervised laboratory sessions, accompanied by private studies.
