Aims and Fit of Module

This module introduces students to some of the major works of English dramatic tragedy from the Elizabethan and Jacobean period. While the main focus will be on Shakespearian tragedy, students will also have opportunity to study the work of selected contemporaries such as Marlowe and Webster.
The aim of the module is to develop students’ understanding of different versions of Elizabethan and Jacobean tragedy, with a focus on language and historical context. Issues of reception and adaptation in the plays will also be explored, including through consideration of contemporary theatrical and film productions.

Learning outcomes

A	read and reflect critically on a range of dramatic tragedy from the Elizabethan and Jacobean period.
B	demonstrate knowledge of the historical, social and political contexts in which the texts were produced and transmitted.
C	produce structured, analytical and critical writing on Elizabethan and Jacobean tragedy incorporating appropriate theoretical approaches.

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions are divided into two components. Lectures introduce students to relevant knowledge and ideas about Elizabethan and Jacobean tragedy, including selected contextual and theoretical approaches. Seminars build on knowledge and ideas presented in the lectures to develop and facilitate critical discussions about specific texts.
