Aims and Fit of Module

This module introduces students to key themes and issues in the interdisciplinary field of medical humanities with a focus on perspectives from Literature and Linguistics. 

The aim of the module is to develop students’ understanding of key themes and issues in medical humanities, including representations of illness, disability, and care in literary and other texts, the semiotics of health and illness, the language of health and illness, and the interaction between health, gender, ethics, society, culture, history, and religion, and enable students to become aware of a variety of approaches to medical humanities, particularly the contribution of Literature and Linguistics to the field. 


Learning outcomes

A	Demonstrate knowledge of key themes and issues in medical humanities. 

B	Work with and think critically about texts from a variety of genres, disciplines, and historical periods.

C	Structure a coherent and critically informed analysis of literary and other texts. 

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions are divided into two components. Lectures introduce students to relevant knowledge of key themes and issues in medical humanities and a variety of approaches to it. Seminars develop critical discussions about the topic.
