Aims and Fit of Module
This module offers students a comprehensive introduction to how language interacts with media. Understood in its broadest sense, media discourse is here viewed both within an interactional and a representational or critical framework. By using a wide variety of authentic texts from newspaper coverage, interview, speech, chat show, advertising, reality television, weblog, etc., it will equip students with a good knowledge of different varieties of language used in media discourse, of how patterns in such language use contribute to recognizable media genres and styles, of broader social themes and consequences that arise from media language, as well as of a number of approaches to media discourse.
• To introduce different varieties of language used;
• To discuss different approaches to media discourse;
• To explore, from different perspectives, how information is presented;
• To analyse a variety of authentic texts;
• To evaluate media discourse as a social practice.
