Aims and Fit of Module

The module aims to offer students ways of appreciating the politics of language in the increasingly globalized, multilingual societies of the contemporary world. By answering such questions as how languages help us organize society and how we can identify and address social issues rooted in languages, the module will enable students to have an overview of Critical Discourse Studies in multilingual contexts.

Learning outcomes

A	Engage in language-based approaches to the study of multilingual societies
B	Critically evaluate and demonstrate in depth knowledge of   the ways language is used to influence, persuade and position us within hierarchies
C	Develop a critical awareness of the various applications of linguistic analysis to everyday talk, the language of the media or the language of institutions more broadly.
D	Critically evaluate and demonstrate in depth knowledge of  different approaches in Critical Discourse Studies including relationships to areas such as systemic-functional grammar, cognitive linguistics, multimodality, forensic stylistics and corpus linguistics.
E	Demonstrate independent and imaginative interpretations of linguistic material.
F	Develop the ability to plan, design, execute and communicate a piece of research or an inquiry..

Method of teaching and learning

The module will be taught though a combination of lectures and seminars for the maximum optimization of learning experience and learning outcomes.
