Introduction to Structural Materials

Module Title Introduction to Structural Materials
Module Level Level 1
Module Credits 5.00

Aims and Fit of Module

The correct use of materials is the bedrock of innovations in engineering structures and devices. In this you will learn to classify materials based on their properties and how to solve fundamental problems in applied statics problems.
You will apply this knowledge to solve simple problems by conducting analysis, interpreting results and selecting materials based on performance indices to suit design specifications.

Learning outcomes

A	A. Summarise the role of engineering materials and their classifications.
B B. Identify the principal applications of engineering materials to industrial design.
C Explain the basic mechanical properties and the failure mechanism of engineering materials.
D Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between microstructure, chemistry, and physical properties of engineering materials.
E E. Use basic principles of materials selection process for industrial design and manufacturing.

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching philosophy of the module follows very much the philosophy of Syntegrative Education. This has meant that the teaching delivery pattern, which follows more intensive block teaching, allows more meaningful contribution from industry partners. This philosophy is carried through also in terms of assessment, with reduction on the use of exams and increase in coursework, especially problem-based assessments that are project focused. The delivery pattern provides space in the semester for students to concentrate on completing the assessments.
This module will be delivered through lectures, seminars and tutorials. Teaching will be through problem-based learning, with problems embedded in the lectures and use made of student response systems to provide formative assessment to the students.
