Aims and Fit of Module
This module aims to cover the fundamentals of pneumatic and hydraulic technology through introducing the student to modern hydraulic pump, hydraulic cylinder, cylinder and control valve. As an application-oriented subject, this module enables students be familiar with the basic concept of fluid transmission and the structure of the pneumatic and hydraulic system. Through this module, students should master the basic principle of hydraulic and pneumatic components. In addition, the scope of this module covers the application of the hydraulic and pneumatic control system in mechatronics system.
Learning outcomes
A Master the basic knowledge and calculation method of hydraulic and pneumatic transmission
B Demonstrate understanding of the working principle, characteristics and application of hydraulic pump, hydraulic cylinder, cylinder and control valve
C Demonstrate understanding of the hydraulic and pneumatic control system circuit diagram
D Design basic hydraulic system and pneumatic control system
E Demonstrate understanding of the application of advanced hydraulic and pneumatic technology in electromechanical equipment
Method of teaching and learning
The teaching philosophy of the module follows very much the philosophy of Syntegrative Education. This has meant that the teaching delivery pattern, which follows more intensive block teaching, allows more meaningful contribution from industry partners. This philosophy is carried through also in terms of assessment, with reduction on the use of exams and increase in coursework, especially problem-based assessments that are project focused. The delivery pattern provides space in the semester for students to concentrate on completing the assessments.
This module is delivered through a combination of formal lectures, seminar, design exercises and supervised laboratory sessions. There is a particular emphasis on developing design skills alongside problems solving.
