Aims and Fit of Module

The Sensors and Instrumentation module focuses on the study and application of various sensors and instruments used in scientific, engineering, and technological fields. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the principles, design, calibration, and operation of these devices. 
 
The aims of this module are: 

1. Understanding Sensor Technology: To provide students with a solid foundation in the principles and operation of various sensors.  

2. Instrumentation System Design: To equip students with the skills necessary to design and configure instrumentation systems. 

3. Measurement Accuracy and Reliability: To enable students to perform accurate and reliable measurements.  

4. Emerging Technologies: To introduce students to emerging trends and technologies in the field of sensors and instrumentation.  

Overall, the Sensors and Instrumentation module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of sensors and instruments, enabling them to apply this knowledge in various scientific, engineering, and technological domains that are non-trivial for robotics.

Learning outcomes

A. Demonstrate a distinct understanding of the physical principles underlying common electrical sensors, applying this knowledge to practical scenarios 

B. Analyze and interpret basic sensor specifications, showcasing a comprehensive understanding of their significance in measurement systems 

C. Examine and critically evaluate the system requirements for a typical measurement system, demonstrating a deep understanding of their implications 

D. Evaluate and analyse common factors influencing the performance of measurement systems, demonstrating a critical appreciation of their impact  

E. Acquire the ability to use specific sensors and instrumentation for a given scenario that demonstrates practical proficiency in performance and sustainable evaluation 

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching philosophy of the module very much follows the philosophy of Syntegrative Education. This has meant that the teaching delivery pattern, which follows more intensive block teaching, allows more meaningful contributions from industry partners. This philosophy is carried through also in terms of assessment, with a reduction in the use of exams and an increase in coursework, especially problem-based assessments that are project-focused. The delivery pattern provides space in the semester for students to concentrate on completing the assessments. 

This module will be delivered through a combination of formal lectures, seminars and supervised laboratory sessions. The fundamental concepts are introduced during the lectures. Whilst in the laboratory practice, students will have the opportunity to have hands-on experience on the use of different sensors and integrating them. At the end of each week, there will be a tutorial session to re-emphasize the subject matter covered in the week  

At the end of the delivery, there will be a seminar session in which the students will be given a glimpse of sensor applications in different fields.
