Module Title AI-Empowered Translation and Intercultural Communication
Module Level Level 1
Module Credits 5

Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to develop students’ competence in translation within the broader context of intercultural communication in today’s AI-driven digital era. It enables students to understand the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in intercultural communication, make informed and ethical use of AI tools to achieve effective communication across linguistic and cultural boundaries, and reflect critically on the evolving relationship between human agency and machine assistance in meaning-making.

The module also aims to equip students with transferable competences that integrate linguistic awareness, digital literacy, and intercultural sensitivity, preparing them for professional contexts where multilingual and AI-mediated communication are increasingly essential. It situates translation learning within digital and intercultural frameworks, enabling students from diverse linguistic backgrounds to engage confidently and effectively in multilingual communication across global work environments.

Learning outcomes

A. Understand key concepts and approaches to AI-empowered translation and intercultural communication.
B. Apply appropriate translation strategies and AI tools to achieve effective communication across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
C. Analyse and evaluate critically how AI technologies shape linguistic choices, cultural representation, and ethical dimensions of translation and intercultural communication.
D. Integrate linguistic awareness, digital literacy, and intercultural sensitivity to address multilingual communication tasks in academic and professional contexts.

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions have two components: lectures and tutorials. Lectures are designed to help students understand main types and modes of translation and principles of translation; whereas tutorials enable students to apply what they have learnt in class to translation practice and hone their translation skills through hands-on translation exercises.
