Aims and Fit of Module
This module aims to equip students with knowledge and skills needed in the professional translation world. It gives students intensive training in translating a wide variety of non-literary texts from English to Chinese and vice versa. Students will be able to analyse the language features of non-literary texts, with a focus on news coverage, advertisement, picture books, instructions and academic texts, and adopt appropriate translation methods. The module is essentially practical in that it concentrates on translating representative material through regular home and class assignments.
Learning outcomes
a. grasp key concepts involved in non-literary translation;
b. conduct text analysis in terms of genre and/or register;
c. translate non-literary texts from English into Chinese and vice versa.
Method of teaching and learning
The teaching sessions are divided into two components (Lectures and tutorials/workshops).
Lectures introduce students to relevant skills used in the translation of professional texts; Tutorials/workshops train students in the use of translation skills and provide students with hands-on practice of translation of various non-literary texts. The interactive approach will be adopted in class teaching.
