Aims and Fit of Module
Translation often requires careful localisation and this can be a complex endeavour, requiring the active collaboration of multiple participants in order to produce a quality product. This module explains to students the process involved, describes some possible pitfalls and ways to avoid them, and offers guidance in creating a translation team, including the selection of a translation company or independent translators. It also touches on aspects such as translation and distribution formats, rates, tools, resources, and best practices that can contribute to a good outcome. Finally, the module includes sample checklists, guidelines and instruction sheets that can be customized for use in various stages of the translation process. Several translation and localization project cases are also demonstrated and practised in this module.
A understand the principles of project management in a translation setting
B clarify the different roles involved in a translation team
C understand the workflow of a translation project
D practice the management of a real/virtual translation project
Method of teaching and learning
The teaching sessions are divided into two components (Lectures and Tutorials). Lectures introduce students to relevant theories involved and skills used in the management of the translation projects; Tutorials train students in the workflow of a translation project and provide students with hands-on practice of translation and its management. The project management tool based interactive approach is adopted in class teaching.
