Aims and Fit of Module

This module is intended to familiarize students with a variety of urban development and planning issues in China that are currently of concern to planning practitioners and researchers. The objectives of this module are to give students:


	a fundamental understanding of Chinese urban development and planning issues arising from the conflicting interests among different social groups or stakeholders in both the public and private domain;

	a further understanding of China’s planning system and practices in a context of rapid socio-economic changes; 

	a deeper insight into the interwoven relationships between planning interventions and demographic, social, economic and environmental changes in the Chinese local context.

Learning outcomes

A.	Identify and understand Chinese urban development and planning issues arising from the conflicting interests among different social groups or stakeholders in both the public and private domain.

B. Understand how China’s planning system and practices work overall in a context of rapid socio-economic changes.

C. Identify the interwoven relationships between planning interventions and demographic, social, economic and environmental changes in the Chinese local context.

D. Summarise the main concerns of planners today and the factors that have shaped contemporary policy priorities

The module is delivered through lectures and tutorials,  Tutorials provide opportunities for hands on activities and group learning.
