Aims and Fit of Module

This seminar on architectural enquiry examines theoretical underpinnings and critical thinking pertinent to research in architectural practice and architectural scholarship. In the seminar, students will become familiar with the endeavor of critical enquiry and research in the field of architecture, understand how to conduct research, and produce and present a thesis prospectus exploring a body of architectural knowledge, raising questions to be explored, and outlining theories and methods by which to explore them.  The body of architectural knowledge engaged with in this module is allied with the content of Studio 3, and together these two semester 3 modules prepare students for the development and presentation of the design and written components of their thesis in semester 4.

Learning outcomes

A.  Critically evaluate a range of research tools and methods relevant to the practice and culture of architecture and urban design.

B. Demonstrate an advanced ability to identify research resources to set and explore a relevant research question critically, and in relation to an architectural design project.

C. Synthesise an advanced understanding of the influence of theory on the spatial, social, and technological aspects of architecture.

D. Integrate into a theoretical agenda an advanced understanding of the influence of the design and development of cities on the contemporary built environment, and of the impact of building projects on existing communities.

E. Synthesise research into original, logically and creatively argued written work in compliance with academic conventions.
