This practical module will provide training in a range of analytical laboratory skills of wide application to many fields of modern biology. The techniques developed in this module include spectrophotometric assays, and chromotographic and electrophoretic separations. Students will learn how to design experiments using these technologies and how they can be used to solve problems in biomedical and biotechnological fields. Experimental design involves the formulation of scientific hypotheses, the design of experiment(s) to test these hypotheses including the conduct of the experiment. Analysis involves identifying the appropriate statistical tools and applying them in the interpretation of the data. This module primarily uses biochemical, genetic and microbiological data, but the underlying principles can be applied to experimental work in any field of biology.
Learning outcomes 
A. Demonstrate how to apply or relate to spectrophotometric assays to measure molecules.

B. Demonstrate how to apply or relate chromatographic and electrophoretic methods to separate molecules prior to quantitative or qualitative analysis.

C. Apply the concept of experimental design, to plan and execute a test hypothesis.

D. Calculate and apply appropriate statistics to evaluating data.

E. Present, evaluate and interpret qualitative and quantitative data, and interpret validity.

F. Produce or articulate sound judgments based on basic theories and concepts.

G. Develop team-working and individual skills and also learn to manage time effectively.

H. Plan and execute a series of experiments, use laboratory equipment correctly and safely to generate data.

I. Demonstrate ability to record/summarize or interpret procedures and protocols.

J. Use or identify a statistical package to calculate data analysis.

Method of teaching and learning 
This module is delivered through a combination of lectures and laboratory practicals. In addition, each laboratory session will be preceded by a tutorial session to provide background in theory and procedures. In the laboratory session students will work individually or within small groups and receive help in the planning, execution and interpretation of the experiments from demonstrators. Course manuals will provide theoretical background, detailed protocols and procedures, and examples of worked data.
1. Simple Experimental Design, Student t-test and abstract Writing.

2. Estimating and Analyzing Sample Means - Comparing cultivars. Design experiment to compare growth of GM and wild type crops.

3. Screening for late onset diabetes. Test the feasibility of a single biochemical assay of blood glucose level.

4. Chromatography –lecture

5. Separation Methods I. Chromatography-Ion exchange.

6. Separation Methods II. nucleic acid electrophoresis and analysis of serum proteins,

7. Hardy-Mendel's Laws of inheritance. Testing Theoretical Models and Data analysis using Chi-square.


9. Basic/Nutritional Biochemistry: UV/visible spectroscopy and spectrohotometry. Determination of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)

10. Studying enzymes: Estimation of alcohol in blood. Experimental data collection.

11. Enzymology: Assaying proteases of the digestive system. Experimental data collection.

12. Ecotoxicology. Dose response of microorganisms to environmental toxins. Experimental design and set-up. Data collection and regression analysis; dose response curve.
