Module Title Cell Biology Techniques
Module Level Level 2
Module Credits 5.00

Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims at providing practical and theoretical experience in techniques currently used in cell biology. Practical experience in many of the techniques currently used in molecular and cell biology will be provided.

Learning outcomes

A. Apply microscopes and other lab equipment correctly to efficiently and safely conduct a series of cell biology experiments.
B. Outline the culture conditions required by different biological systems and the effects of a number of external factors on the growth and physiology of biological systems.
C. Analyse data, interpret validity and apply statistical analyses.
D. Acquire team (group) working abilities in order to effectively manage and execute experiments
E. Apply problem solving abilities and critical thinking to develop appropriate solutions.
F. Compose, evaluate and interpret qualitative and quantitative data, and record procedures and protocols.

Method of teaching and learning

This practical course will be conducted in Biological Sciences laboratories. Each session will be preceded by a lecture session to provide background in theory and procedures, and followed by a lecture/workshop session to discuss learning outcomes. In the laboratory session students will work individually or within small groups and receive help in the planning, execution and interpretation of the experiments from demonstrators. Course manuals will provide theoretical background, detailed protocols and procedures, and examples of worked data.
