The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamental principles that underpin modern organic chemistry. Particular emphasis will be placed on relating each topic studied to examples of pharmacological significance.
Learning outcomes 

By the end of this course students will have acquired an understanding of different functional groups:

A. basic carbonyl chemistry (carboxylic acid, ester, aldehyde, ketone, Reduction and oxidation, Grignard reaction, aldol and Claisen reactions)

B. acetals

C. carbohydrate classification and configuration

D. amino acid classification, property, protection and peptide chemistry

E. the substitution of five and six membered heterocycles

F. various aspects of stereochemistry; and chemical bonding in enzymes

G. They should be able to use these concepts and principles to solve simple theoretical and practical problems in organic chemistry

Method of teaching and learning 
This course will be taught by a series of lectures and lab practicals in Organic Chemistry. Students will learn how to apply their knowledge by completing related quiz, essay and practical labs.
