This module considers modern developments in biotechnology. Technical aspects of recent biotechnological breakthroughs will be discussed and will cover parts of the fields of molecular biology, genetics, microbiology and enzymology.

Regulatory, economic and ethical aspects of the development of novel products via biotechnological processes will be examined by case studies. Potential benefits and drawbacks of these products will be considered as well.
Learning outcomes 
A. Critically evaluate the regulation, economics and ethics related to modern biotechnological techniques.

B. Describe in detail and understand modern approaches for genetic modification of microbes, plants and animals.

C. Compare metagenomics and other high-throughput techniques with classic methods to find antibiotics.

D. Describe in detail the production and discuss the limitations of biofuels.

Method of teaching and learning 
The teaching will be achieved through a series of lectures, group discussions, in class literature reviews and student presentations.

Students will be directed to primary sources of literature and reviews, which will be made available through the Virtual Learning Environment.

Case studies related to the questions above.

Genetic engineering techniques in microbes, plants and animals.

Possible effects of GM crops on the global environment.

The rise of CRISPR. Historical development, technique description, patent war, ethical considerations.

Metagenomics and other high-throughput methods like transposon insertion sequencing versus classical antibiotic identification techniques. Different methods that can aid in drug discovery and development will be discussed and compared, including their possible limitations.

Biotechnology and energy production. Different methods to generate biofuels will be discussed and compared, including their possible limitations.
