Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims at enabling students to use theoretical concepts for interpreting the complexity of family businesses in practice, to evaluate the different social systems at play and to understand how family and business mutually impact each other. It examines the motivations and role of family firms in the society, as well as the strategies and methods they employ for growth, survival, governance, succession, conflict management and education.

Learning outcomes

A	Demonstrate understanding of the generic characteristics and paradoxes of family businesses 
B Critically interpret “familiness” as a challenge as well as a resource at different stages
C Identify and evaluate the key factors of transgenerational entrepreneurship and responsibility
D Evaluate and analyse structures and processes relating to governance, management and people processes in family businesses
E Understand and discuss family business strategy development and options
F Analyse major aspects and facets of succession in family businesses

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching and learning strategy combines traditional teaching in classrooms with active learning, case studies and interactive projects.
